2 Samuel 5:11

11 aAnd bHiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house.

Isaiah 23

An Oracle Concerning Tyre and Sidon

1The coracle concerning dTyre.

Wail, O eships of Tarshish,
for Tyre is laid waste, fwithout house or harbor!
From gthe land of Cyprus
Hebrew Kittim; also verse 12

it is revealed to them.
2Be still, O inhabitants of the coast;
the merchants of iSidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.
3And on many waters
your revenue was the grain of Shihor,
the harvest of the Nile;
you were jthe merchant of the nations.
4Be ashamed, O kSidon, for the sea has spoken,
the stronghold of the sea, saying:
“I have neither labored nor given birth,
I have neither reared young men
nor brought up young women.”
5When the report comes to Egypt,
they will be in anguish
Hebrew  they will have labor pains
over the report about Tyre.
6 mCross over to Tarshish;
wail, O inhabitants of the coast!
7Is this your exultant city
nwhose origin is from days of old,
whose feet carried her
to settle far away?
8Who has purposed this
against Tyre, the bestower of crowns,
whose merchants were princes,
whose traders were the honored of the earth?
9The Lord of hosts has purposed it,
oto defile the pompous pride of all glory,
The Hebrew words for  glory and  hosts sound alike

to dishonor all the honored of the earth.
10Cross over your land like the Nile,
O daughter of Tarshish;
there is no restraint anymore.
11 qHe has stretched out his hand over the sea;
he has shaken the kingdoms;
the Lord has given command concerning Canaan
to destroy its strongholds.
12And he said:
“You will no more exult,
O oppressed virgin daughter of rSidon;
arise, scross over to tCyprus,
even there you will have no rest.”
13Behold the land of uthe Chaldeans! This is the people that was not;
Or  that has become nothing
Assyria destined it for wild beasts. They erected wtheir siege towers, they stripped her palaces bare, they made her a ruin.

14 xWail, O ships of Tarshish,
for your stronghold is laid waste.
15In that day Tyre will be forgotten for yseventy years, like the days
Or lifetime
of one king. At the end of aaseventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:

16 Take a harp;
go about the city,
O forgotten prostitute!
Make sweet melody;
sing many songs,
that you may be remembered.”
17At the end of abseventy years, the Lord will visit Tyre, and she will return to her wages and acwill prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. 18Her merchandise and her wages will be holy to the Lord. It will not be stored or hoarded, but her merchandise will supply abundant food and fine clothing for those who dwell before the Lord.

Ezekiel 26

Prophecy Against Tyre

1 adIn the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 aeSon of man, because afTyre said concerning Jerusalem, agAha, the gate of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me. I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste,’ 3therefore thus says the Lord God: ahBehold, I am against you, O Tyre, and will bring up aimany nations against you, ajas the sea brings up its waves. 4They shall destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers, and I will scrape her soil from her and akmake her a bare rock. 5She alshall be in the midst of the sea a place for the spreading of nets, amfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God. And she shall become plunder for the nations, 6and her daughters on the mainland shall be killed by the sword. anThen they will know that I am the Lord.

7For thus says the Lord God: aoBehold, I will bring against Tyre apfrom the north Nebuchadnezzar
Hebrew Nebuchadrezzar; so throughout Ezekiel
king of Babylon, arking of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers.
8He will kill with the sword asyour daughters on the mainland. atHe will set up a siege wall against you and throw up a mound against you, and raise aua roof of shields against you. 9 avHe will direct the shock of his battering rams against your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen and wagons and chariots, when he enters your gates as men enter a city that has been breached. 11With the hoofs of his horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground. 12They will plunder awyour riches and loot axyour merchandise. They will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses. Your stones and timber and aysoil they will cast into the midst of the waters. 13 azAnd I will stop the music of your songs, and bathe sound of your lyres shall be heard no more. 14 bbI will make you a bare rock. bcYou shall be a place for the spreading of nets. You shall never be rebuilt, bdfor I am the Lord; I have spoken, declares the Lord God.

15Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: Will not bethe coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, bfwhen the wounded groan, when slaughter is made in your midst? 16Then all bgthe princes of the sea will step down from their thrones and bhremove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; bithey will sit on the ground and bjtremble every moment and bkbe appalled at you. 17And they will blraise a lamentation over you and say to you,

“‘How you have perished,
you who were inhabited from the seas,
O city renowned,
bmwho was mighty on the sea;
she and her inhabitants bnimposed their terror
on all her inhabitants!
18Now the coastlands tremble
on the day of your fall,
and the coastlands that are on the sea
are dismayed at your passing.’
19For thus says the Lord God: When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities that are not inhabited, bowhen I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you, 20then bpI will make you go down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you to dwell in the world below, among ruins from of old, bqwith those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; but I will set beauty brin the land of the living. 21I will bring you bsto a dreadful end, and you shall be no more. btThough you be sought for, you will never be found again, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 27

A Lament for Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Now you, buson of man, bvraise a lamentation over Tyre, 3and say to Tyre, who dwells at bwthe entrances to the sea, bxmerchant of the peoples to many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:

“O Tyre, you have said,
I am byperfect in beauty.’
4Your borders are bzin the heart of the seas;
your builders made perfect your beauty.
5They made all your planks
of fir trees from caSenir;
they took cba cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
6Of ccoaks of Bashan
they made your oars;
they made your deck of pines
from cdthe coasts of Cyprus,
inlaid with ivory.
7 ceOf fine embroidered linen from Egypt
was your sail,
serving as your banner;
blue and purple from cfthe coasts of Elishah
was your awning.
8The inhabitants of Sidon and cgArvad
were your rowers;
your skilled men, O Tyre, were in you;
they were chyour pilots.
9The elders of ciGebal and her skilled men were in you,
cjcaulking your seams;
all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you
to barter for your wares.
10 ckPersia and clLud and cmPut were in your army as your men of war. cnThey hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. 11Men of coArvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made cpperfect your beauty.

12 cqTarshish did crbusiness with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your cswares. 13 ctJavan, cuTubal, and cvMeshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. 14From cwBeth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules cxfor your wares. 15The men of cyDedan
Hebrew; Septuagint Rhodes
traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony.
16Syria dadid business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares dbemeralds, dcpurple, ddembroidered work, define linen, coral, and dfruby. 17Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise dgwheat of dhMinnith, meal,
The meaning of the Hebrew word is unknown
honey, oil, and djbalm.
18 dkDamascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and dlwool of Sahar 19and casks of wine
Probable reading; Hebrew  wool of Sahar, Vedan, and Javan
from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, dncassia, and docalamus were bartered for your merchandise.
20Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21Arabia and all the princes of dpKedar were your favored dealers dqin lambs, rams, and goats; in these they did business with you. 22The traders of drSheba and dsRaamah traded with you; they exchanged dtfor your wares duthe best of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold. 23 dvHaran, Canneh, dwEden, traders of Sheba, dxAsshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24In your market these traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of dyblue and dzembroidered work, and in carpets of colored material, bound with cords and made secure. 25 eaThe ships of ebTarshish traveled for you with your merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden ecin the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you out
into the high seas.
edThe east wind has wrecked you
in the heart of the seas.
27Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
your mariners and eeyour pilots,
efyour caulkers, your dealers in merchandise,
and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your crew
that is in your midst,
sink into the heart of the seas
egon the day of your fall.
28At the sound of the cry of your pilots
ehthe countryside shakes,
29and down from their ships
eicome all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea
stand on the land
30 ejand shout aloud over you
and cry out bitterly.
ekThey cast dust on their heads
eland wallow in ashes;
31they emmake themselves bald for you
and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
with bitter mourning.
32In their wailing they enraise a lamentation for you
and lament over you:
eoWho is like Tyre,
like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33When your wares came from the seas,
epyou satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
eqyou enriched the kings of the earth.
34Now eryou are wrecked by the seas,
in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
have sunk with you.
35 esAll the inhabitants of the coastlands
are appalled at you,
and etthe hair of their kings bristles with horror;
their faces are convulsed.
36 euThe merchants among the peoples evhiss at you;
ewyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.’”

Ezekiel 28

Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 exSon of man, say to eythe prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

ez“Because your heart is proud,
and fayou have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
in the heart of the seas,’
yet fbyou are but a man, and no god,
fcthough you make your heart like the heart of a god
3 fdyou are indeed wiser fethan ffDaniel;
no secret is hidden from you;
4by your wisdom and your understanding
fgyou have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries;
5by your great wisdom in your trade
you have increased your wealth,
and fhyour heart has become proud in your wealth
6therefore thus says the Lord God:
fiBecause you make your heart
like the heart of a god,
7therefore, behold, I will bring fjforeigners upon you,
the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against fkthe beauty of your wisdom
and defile flyour splendor.
8 fmThey shall thrust you down into the pit,
fnand you shall die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9 foWill you still say, ‘I am a god,’
in the presence of those who kill you,
though fpyou are but a man, and no god,
in the hands of those who slay you?
10 fqYou shall die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hand of foreigners;
frfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over the King of Tyre

11Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 fsSon of man, ftraise a lamentation over futhe king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

fwfull of wisdom and fxperfect in beauty.
13You were in fyEden, the garden of God;
fzevery precious stone was your covering,
gasardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,
Or lapis lazuli
gcemerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

geOn the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14You were an anointed gfguardian cherub.
I placed you;
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain
you were on ghthe holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15You were blameless in your ways
gifrom the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16In the abundance of gjyour trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from gkthe mountain of God,
and I destroyed you,
Or banished you
gmO guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 gnYour heart was proud because of goyour beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so gpI brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
gqin the sight of all who saw you.
19All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
gryou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”

Prophecy Against Sidon

20The word of the Lord came to me: 21 gsSon of man, gtset your face toward guSidon, and gvprophesy against her 22and say, Thus says the Lord God:

Behold, gwI am against you, O Sidon,
and gxI will manifest my glory in your midst.
And gythey shall know that I am the Lord
gzwhen I execute judgments in her
and hamanifest my holiness in her;
23for I will send hbpestilence into her,
and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.
24“And for the house of Israel hcthere shall be no more a brier to prick or hda thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors hewho have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Israel Gathered in Security

25Thus says the Lord God: hfWhen I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and hgmanifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, hhthen they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob. 26 hiAnd they shall dwell securely in it, and they shall build houses and plant vineyards. They shall dwell securely, hjwhen I execute judgments upon all their neighbors hkwho have treated them with contempt. hlThen they will know that I am the Lord their God.”
